Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed Against Walgreens for Prescription Error

A St. Louis woman that began feeling sick and throwing up a month into her pregnancy thought it was nothing more than morning sickness.

A month later she learned that the pills she thought were prenatal vitamins were instead a potent chemotherapy drug that killed her unborn child, according to a wrongful death lawsuit filed against Walgreens Co., the pharmacy responsible for the prescription error.

The medical negligence and wrongful death suit, seeks unspecified damages and was filed in federal court this week.

The lawsuit claims the company failed to adequately supervise pharmacy personnel who dispensed the wrong medicine and failed to verify the prescription with her doctor.

She miscarried in April but continued to take the prescription believing it would help if she got pregnant again. When she called the pharmacy to request a refill, the pharmacy realized their error.

Walgreens has not formally admitted its mistake. Walgreens spokeswoman Carol Hively said errors are rare but the company investigates all reports of mistakes.
